Pre War

Son of Charles William and Mary (nee SCULLY) HEARNDEN of Watford.

His parents married 1873 in the Bradford, Yorks, district.  Mary died 1921 in Watford aged 70, and was buried 16 February in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Charles died 1930 in Watford aged 78, and was buried 30 August, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

John was born 1885 in Bradford, and resided in Watford.

On the 1891 Census, he is proving elusive.  On the 1901 Census, a scholar aged 16, he lived in East Ham, Essex.  On the 1911 Census, a Corporal in “A” Company, Bedfordshire Regiment aged 25, he was stationed at Prospect Barracks, Bermuda.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals, his qualifying date being 16 August 1914, and was killed in action when shelled in trenches north-west of Wulverghem.

At the time of his death he was an Acting Land Corporal.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, John’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
