Pre War

Son of Alice Jane (nee BAKER) LEE of Eastbourne, and the late John Jethro Andrew LEE.

His parents married 8 April 1891 at St John the Baptist, Layer-de-la-Haye, Essex.  John died 1894 in Watford aged 31, and was buried 28 June in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Alice died 1945 in the Eastbourne district aged 84.

Jack was born 1894 in Watford, and baptised 7 October 1894 at St Mary’s, Watford.

On the 1901 Census, aged 6 he lived in Watford, with his widowed mother and one sibling.  On the 1911 Census, a printer’s junior clerk aged 16, he still lived in Watford, with his grandfather.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Eastbourne, Sussex; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals and was killed in action.

Additional Information

*1 There are a number of possibilities for the J Lee and J G E Lee, who appear on Watford memorials. It is even possible they are the same man. We have chosen to include Jack Lee for the J Lee appearing because he was born in Watford and does not appear to have any middle initials, and 17180 John Edward Lee for the J G E Lee because he was living in Watford. There are other possibilities, but no connection to Watford has been identified for them. There is a brief article about and a Death announcement for Jack in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 23 March 1918. Unfortunately, Jack’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
