William Mabbitt was born in 1890 in Willian to Henry Mabbitt, , and Mary Ann (nee ).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Florence (born 1883), Isabelle (born 1886), Alice (born 1886) and William were living at Pixmore Cottages, Willian, Herts.
William’s father died in 1896.
On the 1901 Census the family of Mary Ann (widow), Isabelle, William, Daisy Mae (born 1894) and Henry (born 1896) were living at Prospect Terrace, Clark’s Lane, Baldock, Herts.
On the 1911 Census William, Railway Platform Porter, was a lodger with the Postance family at 26, Ravendon Road, Hornsey, Middx.
Before the war served in the Metropolitan Police Force (not confirmed)and was related to the Baldock Mabbitt family.
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for William He was enlisted in the Military Mounted Police as Lance Corporal P3368 on 26 Jun 1916.
His movements and attachments to Army formations not be determined but he was seriously wounded at Arras (9 Apr-15 May 1917).
He was discharged on 26 Aug 1917 to home and when they thought he had recovered, worked for a few weeks as a commissionaire for the Spirella Company in Letchworth, living at 34 Shott Lane, Letchworth. Unfortunately his old wound re-opened and despite treatment at the hospital in Cambridge, died there. (JFM 1918),
His funeral was undertaken in Willian and he was buried there. He was attended by a firing party and bugler from the Royal Engineers.
