Son of Ann (nee SHURROCK) SAUNDERS of Watford, and Jonah SAUNDERS.

His parents married 1879 in the Thame, Oxon, district.  Jonah died 1925 in Watford aged 68, and was buried 30 May in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Annie died 1927 in the Watford district aged 71.

Albert was born 1892 in Watford, or more likely Chilton, Bucks, and baptised 28 December 1892 at St Mary’s, Chilton.  He resided in Watford.

On the 1901 Census, aged 10 he lived in Bushey, Herts, with his parents and four siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a golf caddy aged 18, he lived in Watford, with his parents and one sibling.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hertford, and was formerly Private 3828 Hertfordshire Regiment.  He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 17 August 1915, and was killed in action.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Albert’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. There is a brief article about and a Death announcement for Albert in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 22 September 1917; plus an In Memoria
