Son of Jesse and Mary Ann (nee MAJOR) SAYELL.
His parents married 1892 in the Leighton Buzzard, Beds, district. Mary died 1917 in Watford aged 49, and was buried 11 October in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Jesse died 1932 in Watford aged 64, and was buried 23 January, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
James was born 22 February 1896 in Leighton Buzzard, and attended Alexandra School, Watford, from 11 January 1904 to 24 October 1906, when he transferred to Parkgate School, Watford. He resided in Watford.
On the 1901 Census, aged 5 he lived in Leighton Buzzard, with his mother and three siblings. On the 1911 Census, a worker at a saw mill aged 15, he lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings.
Wartime Service
He attested 2 June 1915 in Hertford, in the Territorial Force 4 years service in the U.K.; of Watford.
He embarked Southampton 13 March 1916 and disembarked Rouen 14 March 1916.
He joined his Battalion 8 April 1916, and was attached to the 3rd Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment from 20 April to 10 August 1916, when he rejoined his own Regiment.
He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.
