Biography
The Parish Magazine of October 1915 records Lieutenant Hugh as ‘indirectly connected to Pirton’. Michael Newbery informs us that Hugh’s connection to Pirton was that he was the grandson of Joseph Pollard of Highdown, and this is confirmed by census records. These also record him as being born in Marylebone, London, and aged two in the 1891 census. This means that he would have bbeen about twenty-five at the outbreak of war.
