Wheathampstead Village Memorial,

Pre War

Robert Bernard was born in 1900 (baptised 25 Mar 1900) in Wheathampstead to Arthur Bruton, a housepainter, and Emily (nee Archer).

On the 1901 Census the family consisting of parents, elder brothers George Henry (born 1892), Arthur Cyril (born 1894), sister Dorothy May (born 1897) and Robert were living at Wheathampstead Hill. On the 1911 the family were living at New Marford, Wheathampstead. George was working as a railway porter, Arthur was a motor washer, Dorothy was a dressmaker’s apprentice while Robert was at school.

Wartime Service

Robert was enlisted in 1918 as Private 58422 in the Northamptonshire Regiment in Apr 1918 (probably deemed to have attested on his 18th Birthday). No Service record was found for Robert. However as he served in Ireland on Guard Duties it is likely that he had been attached to Royal Defence Corps 13 Battalion, which had its origin as 2nd (Home Service) Garrison Battalion, Northants Regiment. The Royal Defence Corps had been created in 1916 to provide protection for military establishments and observation (both Coastal and Air) duties in the UK.

Robert was demobilised in Dec 1919. Robert died 1922. His name was added to the Wheathampstead Memorial in 2014.

Additional Information

Brother Cyril served as Private 3038 Hertfordshire Regiment and was killed in action on 3 Oct 1915.
