Ernest George Taylor was born in 1887 in Great Amwell, Ware, Herts to Henry Algernon Taylor and Georgiana (nee Cass) and baptised on 14 Dec 1887 at St Mary the Virgin, Ware.


On the 1891 Census his family of parents, Winifred (born 1882), Edith M (born 1885), Helen M (born 1887). Ernest G and John H (born 1889) were living at Widbury Hill House, Ware with four Servants.


For two years Ernest managed the Bury St Edmunds Malting of his father's Company, H A & D Taylor.


By the 1901 Census with his family of parents, Winifred and Marion were living at Bonningtons in Stanstead Abbots but Ernest was not listed.  On the 1911 Census his parents, Edith, Helen, and Marion were living at Northbrooks, Great Parndon, Essex but again Ernest was not listed.


His father later lived at The Retreat, Hockerill, Bishop's Stortford.

Wartime Service

No Service record was found for Ernest. It is likely he volunteered almost immediately on the outbreak of the Great War in Aug 1914 as he was gazetted on 9 Oct 1914 as 2nd Lieutenant in 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Kings Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) from Officers Training Corps.


Ernest probably went to France with 2nd Battalion of the Regiment in 28 Division on 16 Jan 15 to positions at Ypres. He was attached to 1st Battalion, part of 4 Division also at Ypres. Ernest was promoted to Lieutenant at some time, He was killed in action on 2 May 1915 during the Battle of St Julien (24 Apr-4 May 1915) a part of the 2nd Battle of Ypres. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered in the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
