Biography

He is shown as ‘Cyril William Heber Gray’ by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission with the Service Number 7906707 in the 4th Royal Tank Regiment of the Royal Armoured Corps. 


He was born in Hertfordshire and resided in the county and before being called up in May 1940, was a bus conductor with the Eastern National Bus Company in Hitchin. He was sent abroad in July 1940 to the Middle East where he was killed in action. This was during the series of battles and confused fighting against Rommel's Afrika Corps over many miles of desert codenamed by the British ‘Crusader’.


He has no known grave and is remembered on Column 22 on the Alamein Memorial in Egypt. 


In May 1940 he married Miss Dorothy Stimpson of Langford in Biggleswade Church. She lived in Walthamstow in Essex. His parents were William and Sarah Gray of 76, Hampden Rd, Walsworth, Hitchin.
