Biography
He was born in Hertfordshire and, when he enlisted, was residing in the county. He had been an employee of Harkness Roses of Hitchin and joined up in February 1942. He was given Service Number 5961904 and posted to the 2nd Battalion of the Cameronians which was in the 13th Brigade of the 5th Infantry Division in the 21st Army Group. He left England at the beginning of 1943, serving in Africa, the Middle East. Italy and West European fronts. His death occurred at the very end of the war with Germany. He was drowned on the 1st May 1945 aged 22 years.
He was buried in Plot 2A, Row A, Grave 11 in Hamburg Cemetery, Germany.
He was the son of Mr and Mrs J. Hailey of 78, Stevenage Rd, Hitchin.
