Biography

He attended the Hitchin Grammar School from 1922-1931 and was a member of Radcliffe House. He passed the Oxford School Certificate in 1929. He was awarded a Senior Bursary, obtained his Oxford Senior School Certificate and passed the London County Council Entrance Examination all in 1930. After leaving the school, he was on the staff of the London County Council at County Hall in London. He was a keen Scout and was Scoutmaster in St. Ippolyts. In 1939 he went rock-climbing around Great Gable and the Pillar in the Lake District. He also played hockey for some of the North Herts Clubs. He was described as a good-looking man and a natural leader.

He joined the R.A.F. in August 1940 and was given Service No. 67070. He became a member of 83 bomber Squadron based in Scampton. He was reported missing during operational duties on the night of the 1st/2nd November 1941. He had taken off at 19.55hrs in Hampden I bomber AE358 OL-U. A subsequent telegram from the Air Ministry informed his parents that their son was missing. At the time he was flying the bomber during a mine-laying mission near Kiel. The other three members of the crew were also lost.

He has no known grave and is remembered on Panel 33 of the Runnymede Memorial to the Missing at Egham in Surrey.

The years shown on the Commonwealth War Graves stone situated No. 725 West Extension in Hitchin Cemetery have been transposed, as it reads "Pilot Officer N.J. Lloyd Pilot R.A.F. 30th June 1941 age 22. His Brother Pilot Officer Arthur Edward Lloyd was lost on air operations 1st November 1942 age 27".

He married Miss Joan Mary Kraushaar in St. Mary's Church, Acton in June 1941 and was the elder son of Mr and Mrs Arthur E. Lloyd of 12, Nuns Close, Hitchin, his father being the Hitchin Registrar of Births and Deaths and Relieving Officer of Hitchin District. He also had a sister.
