St Mary's Church Roll of Honour (Book), Hitchin(*1)
Pre War
*1 One W Burrows (William John Tanner Burrows) has a connection to Hitchin, however the St Mary’s Church Roll of Honour book. produced in 2014. suggests a second man with this name.
Looking at the other memorials in Hitchin, none record a second man with this name. Looking at the CWGC and SDITGW database there is no candidate with an obvious connection to Hitchin, nor is there any immediately obviously candidate revealed by the WW1 pension records.
We would be grateful any correction, but at present we have no evidence for a second man – W Burrows. Subject to any new evidence produced we believe that it is possible that the confirmed man is the source of confusion. He initially served in the Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) with the number 47268, but later was transferred to the Labour Corps with the service number 73903. Perhaps the different service numbers have produced a spurious record.
