*1 Of the Hitchin memorials E Gibert only appears on the St Mary’s Church Roll of Honour book, which was compiled for 2014.
In trying to establish the identity of this man we have checked the 16 possibles in the CWGC none have an obvious connection Hitchin or Hertfordshire. Of the 22 possible in the Soldiers Died In The Great War database none have a recorded connection Hitchin or Hertfordshire.
In the WFA pension records there are three Gilberts with a connection to Hitchin, but none with the initial ‘E’ and no E Gilbert with a recorded connection to Hitchin has been found.
There are two other Gilberts listed on Hitchin memorials but neither have a brother named ‘E’ and there is no recorded father of that name.
Based on the research to date, we believe the E Gilbert to be an error, but we would welcome any information that identifies any E Gilbert with a Hitchin correction so that we can include him.
