*1 Of the Hitchin memorials W E Harper only appears on the St Mary’s Church Roll of Honour book, which was compiled for 2014.
In trying to establish the identity of this man we have checked the 3 possible W E Harpers and 32 W Harpers in the CWGC none have an obvious connection Hitchin or Hertfordshire.
Of the 62 possible ‘W Harpers’ and variations in the Soldiers Died In The Great War database none have a recorded connection Hitchin or Hertfordshire. except 265438 W C Harper who appears on various Hitchin memorials including the one mentioned above and who already has a biography.
In the WFA pension records there are three Gilberts with a connection to Hitchin, but none with the initial ‘E’ and no E Gilbert with a recorded connection to Hitchin has been found. Ther are numerous (937) entries for W Harper. So far only those relating a W E or E W Harper have been viewed, so far not have an obvious Hitchin of Hertfordshire connection
There is one other Harper recorded on Hitchin memorials (identified above), but he has no parent or brother named W Harper.
Based on the research to date, we believe W E Harper to be an error, but we would welcome any information that identifies any possible man with a Hitchin correction so that we can include him.
