The St Mary's Church Roll of Honour (Book), Hitchin records a George Negus, this name does not appear on any other Hitchin memorials and so far our research as yet to identfy a man with this name who is directly associated with Hitchin. We think that this entry refers to Private 4/7349, George Herbert Negus, whose biography can be found under Great Offley. He did enlist in Hitchin, but had no direct connection that we have found, although it is possible that in some records Hitchin was given as the postal address (main town) fro Great Offley.
