*1 A ‘J. O. S. Baker’ appears on the St Albans Citizens Memorial, however there is a ‘Joseph Baker’ on the Town Hall Memorial who does not appear on the former. It seems likely that the J. O. S. is intended to be an abbreviation for Joseph Baker, who, confusingly, in some records, appears as Joseph Baker-Burrows. To add to the difficulty there is a separate ‘J Burrows’ on the St Albans Citizens Memorial and a separate ‘Joseph Burrows’ on the Town Hall Memorial who would appear to be different men. Clearly there is much scope for confusion and further research is required to ensure we have identified the names correctly. For the present please see Joseph Baker-Burrows for the biography that we believe applies to this man.
