Cyril Frederick JELLY was born in Tring, Hertfordshire, on 28th May 1911, son of Thomas Jelley, a Railway Porter and Mary Ann Jelley (nee Gorge)). One of their seven children. His parents were married on 13th October 1898, in Biggleswade, Beds.
1921 Census records Cyril aged 10, living with his Parents, three sisters and three brothers, at 7 Railway Cottages, Tring Station, Aldbury, Tring, Herts.
1939 Register, Cyril aged 28, is employed as a Clerk and General Labourer, living with his parents, at 7 Railway Cottages, Tring Station, Aldbury, Herts.
Wartime Service
Cyril enlisted in the Royal Navy at Portsmouth, Hampshire and issued with the service No. P/KX 133148.
He was serving aboard HMS Culver (Y 87) (Formerly the USCGC Mendota. She was transferred to the Royal Navy from the US Coast Guard under the Lend-Lease Act) HMS Culver was escorting Convoy SL-98 when the convoy was attacked at 21-31 Hrs, on 31st January 1942, by the German U-Boat U-105 under the command of KrvKpt. Heinrich Schuch. U-105 fired a salvo of four torpedoes at the Convoy, two struck HMS Culver, one hitting the forward Boiler Room and one Aft near the magazine store, the ship blew-up braking in two and sinking with-in minutes, with the loss of the Commander Lt. Cmdr. R. T. Gordon-Duff (RN), seven Officers and 119 ratings Cyril being one of them. One Officer and 12 Rating survived, they were rescued by HMS Londonderry. Cyril has no known grave he is Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Portsmouth, Hampshire, to the missing at sea. Panel 69. Column 1.
