Pre War

Joseph Gurney Fowel BUXTON was born on 5th July 1913, in Northrepps, Norfolk, son of Henry Fowell Buxton a Brewery Director and Katherine Tayspel Buxton (nee Round). The third of their five sons. His parents were married on 24th July 1900, in Essex.


He was Baptised on 9th August 1913, in Overstrand, Norwich, Norfolk.


1921 Census records Joseph aged 7, living with parents, brothers, John (18), Michael (6) and Henry (5), at Minor Groves, High Wych, Herts. The family had a Governess, and seven Domestic Servants.


Joseph married Elizabeth Langley Barbour on 22nd April 1938, at St Alban’s Church, Tettenhall, Cheshire. They went on to have three children.

Wartime Service

Joseph enlisted in the Grenadier Guards, issued with the service No. 68895, he obtained the rank of Captain.


Joseph saw action in North Africa, he was Killed in Action on 23rd April 1943, during the Battle of Medjaz-El-Bab. He is buried in the Medjaz-El-Bab War Cemetery, Tunisia. Grave Ref: 9. C. 1.


His Headstone inscription Reads: “HEAVEN'S MORNING BREAKS AND EARTH'S VAIN SHADOWS FLEE” who requested it is not known.
