*1 J Knightley and J T Knightley appear on the Hertford Town Memorial, and a James Thomas Knightley on the All Saints Church Memorial in Hertford. The St Albans Cathedral Diocese records also list both names, but does offer some additional information, it records J Knightley as a Private in the Bedfordshire Regiment and J T Knightley as a Private in the Labour Corps.
Research has identified that 'James Knightley' (SDITGW) was formerly 7237 in the Bedfordshire Regiment before being transferred as Private 399778 to the Labour Corps. We have looked for another man with a similar name, but have yet to find anyone. For these reasons we believe that they are one and the same man and that the change of regiment/corps has resulted in confusion and therefore duplication. Such transfers were relatively common and due to a man being no longer fit for active service due to wounding, injury or illness.
