HAW Battlefield Tour 2019

19 September 2019 00:00

This year’s tour will offer something completely new for Herts at War in that our annual tour will depart from the Western Front and head to Normandy to spend four day following the fortunes of Hertfordshire’s servicemen in the 1944 D-Day landings and subsequent fighting for Normandy. Based at a Hotel in Port-en-Bessin, we will spend three nights in the area. The proposed itinerary is as follows:

Picking up in Hertfordshire, we travel to Normandy via Dover-Calais Ferry. En-route to the Hotel we visit the famous Pegasus Bridge to look at the very first action of D-Day by men of the Ox & Bucks Light Infantry. We visit Ranville cemetery where the first fallen now rest and also visit the grave of a Hertfordshire man with a unique wartime story.

Day Two: Friday 20 September

A Full day’s study of the British & Canadian Beaches including Gold, Juno & Sword, Arromanches for the Mulberry Harbour. We visit Ver-sur-Mer for the 86th Field (Hertfordshire Yeomanry) and Hertfordshire Regiment Memorials and study in some detail the involvement of those Hertfordshires who were part of the very first waves to come ashore.

Day Three: Saturday 21 September

Full day’s study of the inland fighting including the breakout from Caen, actions around the village of Crepon, operations Epsom & Goodwood, visiting the village of Villers Bocage, Tilly, Hill 112 and finally the beautiful town of Bayeaux and the CWGC Bayeux Memorial to the Missing.
